Unionized healthcare workers took to the streets of New York City on Sept. 24 to call on the Trump administration to reinstate Temporary Protective Status [TPS] for Haitian immigrants in danger of being deported without it.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in June that the Trump administration has the right to revoke TPS for Haitian and Syrian immigrants.

Following the ruling, New York Immigration Coalition head Murad Awawdeh said more than 40,000 New Yorkers would lose their Temporary Protected status as a result of the decision.

On Thursday in Brooklyn, 11999 SEIU healthcare workers carrying signs declaring “Citizenship Now!” and “Patients Need All of Us” rallied outside Brookdale Hospital on Rockaway Parkway to send a clear message to the White House.

They said revoking TPS for the Haitian immigrants at the hospital has left Brookdale’s staff seriously short-handed—while leaving many immigrants in the community too afraid to leave their homes. And while some said they were proud of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, others said they want to see the mayor do more to protect immigrant workers stripped of their legal protections.

1199SEIU is also calling on Congress to immediately restore legal status for TPS holders and other immigrants; pass the Dream and Promise Act to create a pathway to citizenship; end discriminatory travel bans and processing delays crippling our healthcare system pipeline; and prioritize funding for healthcare—instead of blank checks for ICE and deportations.
