On this episode of “What’s Going On?” we speak with Maura Collinsgru, policy director with Citizen Action, Carol Tanzi, chief shop steward of USW Steelworkers Nurses Local 4-200, and Larry Hamm, founder of the People’s Organization for Progress.

Our panel talks about the devastating impact of GOP cuts to Medicaid and the essential role local community groups can play in supporting healthcare unions up against profit-fixated hospitals.

New Jersey’s HPAE Nurses Local 5138 at Hackensack Meridian Health’s Ocean Medical Center put strike plans on hold after reaching a last minute tentative contract that improves wages and provides enforceable patient to staff ratios.

All this as the Trump administration doubles down on its mass deportation plans and voters in New York City and New Jersey prepare to vote in their primaries for mayor and governor.

In the second half of the program, Nation Editor Don Guttenplan shares his magazine’s rationale for endorsing Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani as their first choice for New York City mayor and New York City Comptroller Brad Lander as their backup selection.

Guttenplan also previews the Nation’s blockbuster 160th anniversary edition that includes entries from ALL 50 states.
